MathWings,
SFAF’s comprehensive mathematics program for grades
K to 6, uses exploration, experimentation, and communication
to engage students in active, problem-solving experiences.
Developed at Johns Hopkins University, MathWings is
based on the most up-to-date research in effective mathematics
instruction and assessment as reflected by the National
Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ (NCTM) Principles
and Standards for School Mathematics and on the principles
of cooperative learning.
MathWings captures students’
interest by involving them in real world problem-solving
activities, which, in turn, helps them achieve meaningful
mathematical knowledge. MathWings uses concrete materials
to build an understanding of mathematical concepts and
then guides the students in using pictorial representations
and symbols to express and extend that understanding.
Fluent mathematical skills are built on this solid foundation.
is designed to make kindergarteners enthusiastic about
exploring shapes, patterns, numbers, and space and ready
to take on the more formal world of mathematics that
they will meet in grade 1.
- Interactive calendar-based activities
informally introduce and reinforce concepts and skills.
- Whole-class mini-lessons formally
develop key concepts.
- Instructional Centers allow teachers
to reinforce content either individually or in small
groups.
- Exploration Centers allow students
to work individually on the concepts and skills that
have been taught.
- Informal assessment occurs during
lessons and center time; scripts for individual student
interviews yield formal assessment information.
- Math-at-a-Glance schedule tells
you how to plan.
is designed to give students both a firm grasp of basic
number skills and an understanding of the concepts needed
to apply those skills in a wide variety of contexts
and situations.
- Interactive calendar-based activities
informally introduce and reinforce concepts and skills.
- Lessons capture student interest
with literature or thought-provoking questions.
- Teamwork time in every lesson
leads students to explore the lesson topic in pairs
or teams.
- Guided discussion helps students
clarify their understanding of concepts and develop
fluency in math skills.
is designed to provide students with a solid foundation
in mathematics, and the ability to use mathematical
reasoning to solve problems and confidently explain
their reasoning.
- Over the course of each lesson,
the center of action shifts from the teacher to teams
and ultimately to individual students.
- Lessons open with the teacher
and students modeling and exploring concepts and skills.
- Teams explore a series of related
problem situations and come to agreement over solutions
and the strategies they used to reach them.
- Individual students solve related
problem situations.

Your MathWings Coach builds a partnership with your
school through training sessions, on-site coaching,
scheduled telephone meetings, quarterly progress reports,
and informal telephone support. Training sessions are
developed in conjunction with school leaders and are
customized to your school’s achievement plan.
The two-day initial training (one-day for Kindergarten)
prepares teachers to implement MathWings. The training
includes effective cooperative-learning routines to
be used in MathWings.
Goal-focused achievement planning sets the stage for
success. School leaders and your MathWings Coach develop
specific goals and monitor student progress.
- Every quarter, MathWings teachers,
schools leaders, and your MathWings Coach review student
progress data.
- Goals and interventions for
the following quarter are planned based on the data.
As the year progresses, you will have a variety of ways
to work with your MathWings Coach to review your progress
and refine your goals. Your school receives:
- Telephone meetings two to three
weeks after initial training to answer questions and
troubleshoot.
- On-site support visits over the
year at each school to observe classes, meet with
MathWings teachers and administrators, review data
on student progress, and set new goals.
- Follow-up telephone meetings with
small groups of MathWings teachers at each grade level.
These quarterly telephone meetings support implementation
of the program by providing teachers with further
training, troubleshooting, goal setting, and help
with assessment issues.
- Unlimited, informal telephone
support for all staff members.
