Promoting family literacy is
an integral part of our elementary program, and for
some subgroups of children, additional home support
is the key to increasing achievement. Raising Reading
Stars provides schools with the tools they need to increase
family involvement and support for building reading
skills at home.
Raising
Reading Stars provides school staff members with the
necessary training to establish and run a series of
family literacy workshops. The goal of the program is
to enable family members to build their children’s
reading skills at home. Specific workshop goals include:
- Establishing family members as
listeners when their children read
- Supporting oral-language development
at home
- Using phonics to read words
At the Raising Reading Stars workshops,
families are provided with literacy videos to reinforce
phonics skills and reading vocabulary with their children.
The videos, which include animation and puppet skits,
make viewing fun for both the children and adults. The
workshops also provide a base for ongoing communication
between school staff and parents regarding the children’s
growing skills.
Raising Reading Stars provides:
- A guide for each staff member
that includes detailed plans for the family literacy
workshops, as well as in-depth information to help
build family attendance and maximize family involvement
- A set of four Reading Reels@Home
videos for each family
The training and support for Raising Reading Stars includes:
- One day of on-site training to
provide a powerful start-up for school staff members
- A follow-up day of on-site training,
held after the first workshop, to focus on family
outreach, trouble-shooting, and setting goals
- Scheduled phone conferences
- Unlimited informal telephone
support
