FastTrack Phonics is part of our program for beginning readers, but it can also be used as an intervention for older students who are reading below grade level. The program is fast-paced to get students back on track quickly to achieve AYP.

FastTrack Phonics is a fun, fast-paced, and systematic phonics program that builds students’ skills in phonemic awareness, letter-sound correspondence, word-level blending and segmenting, and beginning spelling.

FastTrack Phonics is designed for classrooms in which students are just beginning to read. The sequence of lessons starts with the phonemic awareness skills of hearing initial sounds, and auditory blending and segmenting. Detailed lesson plans guide teachers as they teach phonemes and letter-sound correspondences. Beginning word structure skills, including adding endings and recognizing compound words, are also introduced. The lessons are appropriate for a variety of age groups, and they are flexible enough to be customized to the needs of a particular student, class, or group. Group response routines and cooperative learning activities engage all students in the lessons. Frequent assessment guides instruction so that teachers can ensure student mastery. A supplement is available when additional phonics instruction is warranted.

Instructional Materials
FastTrack Phonics program includes:

  • Manuals - A set of manuals that provide daily lessons and assessment materials. One volume for kindergarten level, three volumes for first grade level.
  • Key Cards - 6” by 8” color key cards that link sounds and letters together to cement letter/sound correspondences in students’ minds.
  • Student Partner Practice Booklets – Powerful interactive practice activities to build mastery.
  • Letter-Blending Decks - 3” by 4” letter and letter-combination cards teachers use to demonstrate sound blending.
  • Phonics Picture Card Set - 6” by 8” color picture cards used in phonemic awareness and phonics activities.
  • Media Support - Engaging video series that reinforces letter/sound correspondence, and models reading skills and partner learning activities using puppets and animations.

Professional Development
Your SFAF Coach builds a partnership with your school through training sessions, onsite coaching, scheduled telephone meetings, and informal telephone support. The professional development provided by the SFAF staff is designed to support school leaders and teachers as they make substantial changes in their approach to classroom instruction.

Initial Training
The one-day onsite initial training prepares teachers to implement FastTrack Phonics. The training will focus on:

  • Phonemic awareness, decoding, and word recognition strategies.
  • Elements of lessons that provide engaging images, routines, and practice needed to ensure success for each student.
  • Assessment processes, and adaptations to lessons based on assessments, to meet individual and group needs.
  • Training in beginning levels of cooperative learning.
  • Support for administrators on monitoring and improving program implementation.

Goal-Focused Achievement Planning
Goal-focused achievement planning sets the stage for success. School leaders and your SFAF Coach develop specific goals and monitor student progress.

  • Your SFAF Coach works with teachers to review student data, set goals for progress, and develop plans for achieving those goals.
  • Every quarter, teachers, school leaders, and your SFAF Coach review student progress data.
  • Goals and interventions for the following quarter are planned based on the data.

Ongoing Training and Coaching
As the year progresses, your SFAF Coach will have a variety of ways to work with you to review your progress, refine your goals, and strengthen your instruction.

  • Following initial planning, telephone meetings to answer questions and troubleshoot will be scheduled.
  • Your SFAF Coach will visit your school at least twice during the year to observe classes, meet with teachers and administrators, review data on student progress, and review and set goals.
  • Each quarter, a telephone meeting will be scheduled to allow you, your coach, and school leaders to discuss students’ progress, troubleshoot, and reset goals.
  • Unlimited, informal telephone support is available for all staff members.
